The Id Gah Mosque is the largest mosque in Kabul and the country's principal venue for national religious gatherings, especially the mass open-air prayers marking the two Eid festivals for which it is named. Set beside a large open ground that can accommodate enormous congregations, it has long been a stage for public and political occasions in the capital, including proclamations at pivotal moments in Afghan history. The main prayer hall and arcaded courtyard anchor a busy district.
