A temple near Kandy renowned for its exquisite wood carvings, Embekka Devalaya dates to the Gampola period of the fourteenth century. Its drummers' hall is supported by intricately carved timber pillars depicting swans, wrestlers, dancers, mythical creatures and floral designs regarded as among the finest woodwork in Sri Lanka. The devale is dedicated to a guardian deity and remains an active place of worship, drawing visitors to admire its centuries-old carved columns and beams.
