Perched on a rock near Kandy, this fourteenth-century temple is one of the finest surviving examples of Gampola-period architecture, combining brick and stone in a tall, imposing image house. Its walls bear traces of old murals and carvings, and the elevated setting affords wide views over terraced paddy fields. Built during a period of flourishing hill-country kingdoms, it blends Sinhalese and South Indian design, forming part of a cluster of historic temples in the region.
