A fourteenth-century Buddhist temple built largely of stone near Kandy, Gadaladeniya is notable for its South Indian-influenced architecture, unusual among the island's temples. Set on a rocky outcrop, the complex combines a stone image house with a stepped dagoba and carved detailing that reflects the cross-cultural artistic contact of the period. Its elevated position offers views over the countryside, and it forms part of a trio of important medieval temples near the old royal capital.
