This memorial in Colombo commemorates Sri Lanka's independence from British rule in 1948, taking the form of an open stone hall raised on carved lion columns in the style of a Kandyan royal audience pavilion. Rows of sculpted lions surround the base, symbolising national strength, and a statue of the first prime minister stands nearby. Set within Independence Square, an open expanse popular with joggers and evening strollers, the monument hosts national day ceremonies.
