A striking Mughal gateway standing at a busy junction in Lahore, Chauburji is named for its four corner towers crowned with flaring, bell-shaped tops. Built in the mid-seventeenth century, it once served as the ornamental entrance to a since-vanished garden, possibly laid out for a Mughal princess. Its brick facade is decorated with glazed tilework and calligraphic panels in blue, yellow and green. Now isolated by modern roads, it survives as a much-photographed emblem of the city.
