A grand Victorian-Gothic market hall in the Saddar district of Karachi, Empress Market was built in the 1880s and named in honour of Queen Victoria. Its tall clock tower rises above arcaded stone galleries where traders sell spices, produce, textiles, pets and household goods beneath high vaulted ceilings. The building is a prominent surviving example of British colonial commercial architecture in the city and remains a busy, chaotic hub of daily trade.
