This fortified palace was the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire in the 18th century, at the height of their power. Though the wooden mansion within was destroyed by fire, the massive stone ramparts, ornate gateways and foundations survive, evoking the grandeur of the Maratha court. The great Delhi Gate, studded with iron spikes, and the surrounding walls draw visitors, while an evening sound-and-light show recounts the palace's turbulent history. It remains the defining historical monument at the heart of Pune.
