This graceful early-20th-century palace set in extensive gardens served as a place of internment for Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders during the Quit India movement. Italianate arches and spacious verandas ring the building, which now houses a memorial and museum with photographs and personal relics. The samadhis of Kasturba Gandhi and Gandhi's secretary lie in the grounds, marking those who died here in captivity. Donated to the nation, the peaceful estate is an important site of the freedom struggle near Pune.
