Overlooking Gorai Creek on Mumbai's northern edge, this immense golden-domed pagoda was built to honour the meditation teacher who reintroduced Vipassana to India. Its central dome, among the largest stone domes without supporting pillars, enshrines relics and shelters a vast hall where thousands can meditate at once. Reached by a short ferry ride, the site draws day visitors and practitioners alike. Inside, an exhibition explains the life of the Buddha, while the gilded exterior gleams above the mangroves.
