Ikuta Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Japan, said to have been founded in ancient times and lending its name to part of the city of Kobe that grew up around it. Dedicated to a deity associated with weaving and matchmaking, it stands amid a small sacred wood in the busy central Sannomiya district, an unexpected pocket of calm surrounded by shops and streets. The vermilion halls have been rebuilt many times after fires, floods, and war, yet the shrine endures as a popular site for prayers, weddings, and New Year visits.
