Gango-ji is one of the oldest temples in Japan, its origins tracing to a monastery in the earlier capital of Asuka that was relocated to Nara in the eighth century. Now a modest complex within the old merchant quarter of Naramachi, it is listed among the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. Some of the roof tiles on its main hall are said to be among the oldest in the country, distinguishable by their weathered brown color amid the newer gray. The surrounding lanes of preserved townhouses make it a natural focus for exploring old Nara on foot.
