Yakushiji is one of the great ancient temples of Nara and part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara World Heritage listing. Founded in the late seventh century and dedicated to the Buddha of healing, it is celebrated for its East Pagoda, whose alternating large and small roofs create an illusion of six storeys though it has only three. The temple's symmetrical layout once featured twin pagodas flanking the main hall. Fine bronze statues from its earliest era survive inside, ranking among Japan's most important early sculptures.
