The largest Hachiman shrine in Tokyo, this seventeenth-century foundation in the old Fukagawa district is closely tied to the early history of sumo, whose professional tournaments were once held on its grounds; monuments to grand champions stand among the trees. Its August festival is one of the city's three great festivals, famous for spectators dousing the parading portable shrines with water. The shrine also displays two ornate golden portable shrines encrusted with jewels, and a lively market keeps the old mercantile spirit alive.
