The principal church of Floriana, the fortified suburb just outside Valletta's landward walls, dedicated to St Publius, held to be the first bishop of Malta. Its broad facade faces the open Granaries square, whose ground is pierced with the round stone caps of underground grain silos once used to store the city's reserves. The church was heavily damaged by wartime bombing and rebuilt, retaining a spacious Baroque interior. The vast square in front is used for public gatherings and open-air events.
