This Lutheran church on Nevsky Prospekt was long the principal place of worship for Saint Petersburg's large German community, its restrained Romanesque-revival facade framed by twin towers and set behind a garden. Built in the mid-nineteenth century on the site of an earlier church, it ran a renowned school whose graduates included prominent scientists and writers. During the Soviet period the interior was converted into a swimming pool before its later restoration.
