Rising within the Peter and Paul Fortress, this early-eighteenth-century cathedral is crowned by a slender gilded spire that long made it the tallest structure in the city. Designed by Domenico Trezzini in a restrained Baroque style unusual for Orthodox Russia, it houses the tombs of nearly every Russian emperor and empress from Peter the Great onward, including the reburied remains of the last Romanovs. An angel weathervane atop the spire is a symbol of the city.
