This Saint Petersburg Metro station, opened in the mid-1950s, honours the nearby Kirov industrial works and Soviet heavy industry through its restrained but monumental design. Rows of fluted grey columns line the central hall, their capitals decorated with reliefs evoking energy, machinery and labour. The subdued palette and clean lines mark a more austere strand of Stalinist station architecture, and a bust at the platform's end commemorates the revolutionary figure it is named for.
