This early Baroque church stands beside the Gate of Dawn at the southern edge of Vilnius's old town. Built for the Discalced Carmelites in the first half of the seventeenth century, its facade of coloured marble and its richly frescoed interior mark it as an important example of the style in the city. The church connects to the chapel housing the venerated icon of the Madonna above the gate. Its position on the main street leading into the walled town makes it a landmark for pilgrims and visitors alike.
