Rising over three hundred metres in the Karoliniskes district, this broadcasting tower is the tallest structure in Lithuania and a site of national memory. In January 1991 unarmed civilians defending the tower against Soviet troops were killed, and a memorial marks the event at its base. A revolving cafe near the top offers sweeping views over the capital and surrounding countryside. During the winter holidays the tower is illuminated as a giant Christmas tree, becoming a seasonal landmark visible from across the city.
