This museum near Toompea hill documents Estonia's experience under Soviet and German occupation and its path back to freedom. Through personal stories, film and everyday objects, the exhibits convey deportations, resistance and life under totalitarian rule during the twentieth century. A former KGB prison cell displayed in the basement grounds the history in a physical space. Renamed Vabamu after a major redesign, the museum balances difficult subject matter with reflection on liberty, and is a key stop for understanding the nation's history.
