This fortified complex crowns the limestone hill above Tallinn's lower town and has served as the country's seat of power since medieval times. Founded by Danish and later Livonian rulers, its walls incorporate the tall Pikk Hermann tower, from which the national flag is raised each dawn. Today the castle houses the Riigikogu, Estonia's parliament, whose pink Baroque facade contrasts with the grey medieval stonework behind it. Visitors gather on the surrounding squares to view the towers and the ceremonial flag-raising.
