Once a separate town on the Habsburg frontier, Zemun is now a district of Belgrade retaining a distinctly Central European character along the Danube. Narrow streets of low pastel houses climb Gardoš hill toward the Millennium Tower, built to mark a thousand years of Hungarian settlement, from which views sweep across the river. A lively riverside quay lined with fish restaurants and moored boats draws diners in the evening. The old town, church spires, and market give the quarter a village-like feel within the sprawling capital.
