Tucked into the lower ramparts of Belgrade Fortress, Ružica is one of the oldest churches in the Serbian capital and among its most atmospheric. Originally a fortress chapel and later a gunpowder store, it was rebuilt after the First World War using materials salvaged from the battlefield. Two chandeliers fashioned from spent cartridges, swords, and shell casings hang inside, a striking memorial forged from the debris of war. Ivy drapes the stone exterior, and statues of medieval and modern Serbian soldiers flank the entrance.

Where next?

The world is wide open.
