The Lutheran Cathedral of Saint Mary is the towering Gothic church at the heart of Sibiu's old town, built by the Saxon community from the fourteenth century. Its slender spire, rising over seventy metres, is a landmark visible across the city and surrounding plain. Inside, a large fresco of the Crucifixion, colourful tomb slabs, and a monumental organ fill the lofty nave. The crypt holds the remains of prominent townspeople, including a Wallachian prince, and organ concerts are held here in summer.
