The Cathedral of St. Bartholomew stands at the centre of the main square in Plzen, its slender spire the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic at over one hundred metres. Built from the late fourteenth century, the Gothic church houses a treasured stone Madonna of Plzen on its high altar. Visitors may climb the tower for panoramic views across western Bohemia. The surrounding square, one of the largest in the country, is lined with historic houses, a plague column, and gilded fountains marking the city's heraldic symbols.
