The Cámara Santa is a pre-Romanesque chapel of the ninth century, later incorporated into Oviedo's Gothic cathedral, that shelters the most precious relics and jewelled crosses of the early Asturian kingdom. Its lower level is a barrel-vaulted crypt, while the upper chamber preserves carved apostle columns among the finest sculpture of the period. Recognised by UNESCO as part of the monuments of the early Asturian realm, it survived heavy damage in the twentieth century and was painstakingly restored, displaying gem-encrusted gold works.
