Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of the Asturias

While most of Iberia lay under Muslim rule in the 9th century, the small Kingdom of Asturias kept Christian tradition alive and invented an architecture of its own. Pre-Romanesque churches — San Miguel de Lillo, Santa María del Naranco, Santa Cristina de Lena and San Julián de los Prados, together with the Cámara Santa in Oviedo — anticipated forms that would spread across medieval Spain; the fountain of La Foncalada adds rare early hydraulic engineering. UNESCO inscribed the monuments in 1985.
