This modest parish church in the old town of Toledo would be little visited were it not the home of El Greco's monumental canvas depicting the burial of the Count of Orgaz, painted in 1586 and still hanging in the chapel for which it was created. The vast painting divides earthly and heavenly realms, its lower half a gallery of solemn nobles in black, its upper reaches a swirl of saints and angels. The church itself preserves a fine Mudéjar bell tower and remains a place of quiet pilgrimage for admirers of the artist.
