Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities shaped Toledo across two millennia, and the city wears every layer: Roman municipium, Visigothic capital, fortress of the Córdoba emirate, frontier bastion of the Reconquista, and briefly the seat of Charles V's empire in the 16th century. Synagogues, mosques and the great Gothic cathedral crowd its hilltop tangle of lanes above the Tagus. UNESCO inscribed the historic city in 1986.
