Spain's national army museum occupies the vast rebuilt fortress that crowns the highest point of Toledo above the Tagus gorge. Reconstructed after severe damage in the civil war, the building houses an extensive collection spanning arms, armour, uniforms, flags and military history from antiquity to the present, arranged over many floors around a central courtyard. Excavations beneath the galleries reveal Roman, Visigothic and Islamic remains, and the upper terraces command a sweeping panorama over the historic city and river.
