This great palace in the heart of Genoa was for centuries the seat of the doges who ruled the maritime republic, and its grand halls and courtyards reflect the political power of the city at its height. Rebuilt after a fire and much altered over time, it combines medieval towers with baroque and neoclassical elements. Its frescoed council chambers and a soaring atrium are now used for major art exhibitions and cultural events. A former prison tower can be climbed for views over the surrounding rooftops and the sweep of the harbour.
