This national picture gallery, set in the university quarter of Bologna, traces the development of painting in the region from the medieval period through the baroque. Its rooms are especially strong in the work of local masters such as the Carracci family, Guido Reni and Guercino, who shaped one of the most influential schools of Italian art. Earlier highlights include an altarpiece by Raphael and gilded Gothic panels. The chronological arrangement follows the shift toward baroque naturalism.
