The capital of Emilia-Romagna, Bologna is one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in northern Italy, characterised by 40 kilometres of continuous arcaded walkways—the porticoes—that shade pedestrians through the historic core. The two leaning towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, rise above the Torre degli Asinelli square. The city is home to the oldest continuously operating university in the Western world, founded in 1088, and is considered the gastronomic capital of Italy.
