Standing near the Ticinese gate south of Milan's old core, this basilica traces its origins to the early Christian centuries and was long linked with the relics of the Three Magi before they were taken to Cologne. Its finest feature is the Portinari Chapel, an early Renaissance jewel frescoed by Vincenzo Foppa. The tall bell tower is crowned by a star rather than a cross, recalling the Magi legend. A quiet cloister and an archaeological area beneath the church reward visitors who linger.
