This wide terrace along the crest of the Janiculum offers one of the most celebrated panoramas of Rome, taking in the domes, bell towers, and rooftops of the historic centre spread below. At its centre rises an equestrian monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, and busts of the fighters who defended the short-lived Roman Republic of 1849 line the surrounding avenues. Each day at noon a cannon is fired from the hillside, a tradition dating to the nineteenth century once used to synchronise the city's clocks.
