Auerbachs Keller is a historic tavern in the cellars of a Leipzig shopping arcade, counted among the oldest and most famous restaurants in Germany. Dating in some form to the early sixteenth century, it gained lasting fame through Goethe, who set a memorable scene of his drama Faust here, in which the devil Mephistopheles conjures wine and rides out of the cellar on a barrel. Statues at the arcade entrance and murals inside depict the legend, and the vaulted rooms serve traditional Saxon cuisine.
