St. Nicholas Church is the largest church in Leipzig and a site of immense significance in recent German history. Founded in the twelfth century, its interior was remodelled in a striking neoclassical style, with columns rising into palm-frond capitals painted pink, green, and white. From the 1980s the church hosted weekly Monday peace prayers that grew into the mass demonstrations of 1989, helping to bring down the East German regime in a peaceful revolution. Bach premiered several works within its walls.
