St. Thomas Church is a Gothic church in central Leipzig famous above all as the workplace of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. For twenty-seven years Bach served here as director of music, composing many of his great sacred works for its choir, and his remains now lie beneath a bronze plate in the chancel. The church's boys' choir, the Thomanerchor, has sung here for some eight hundred years and continues its tradition today. Martin Luther preached in the building during the Reformation, and its tall tower rises over the old town.
