The Monument to the Battle of the Nations is a colossal memorial on the outskirts of Leipzig commemorating the 1813 defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. Inaugurated in 1913 on the battle's centenary, it rises about ninety-one metres and is one of the largest monuments in Europe. Built of granite and concrete over a reflecting pool, its interior holds a vast domed crypt guarded by giant stone figures and a hall of fame with monumental warrior statues. A long climb of hundreds of steps leads to a platform beneath the summit.
