Frankfurt Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, is a Gothic church of exceptional historical importance despite never having been the seat of a bishop. From the sixteenth century it served as the site where Holy Roman Emperors were elected and later crowned, giving it a central role in imperial ceremony. Its tall red-sandstone tower, completed in the nineteenth century, offers a climb to a viewing gallery above the old town. The church retains medieval frescoes, choir stalls, and an electoral chapel where the emperors were chosen.
