The fine-arts museum of Toulouse occupies a former Augustinian convent whose Gothic church, cloisters, and chapter house form an atmospheric setting for the collection. Its greatest strength is an outstanding assembly of Romanesque and Gothic sculpture, including carved capitals and gargoyles rescued from demolished city buildings. Paintings from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century fill the upper galleries. The tranquil cloister garden, planted to reflect medieval traditions, is a favourite retreat in the centre of the pink-brick city.
