The cathedral of Toulouse is an unusual composite building whose mismatched nave and choir, set at slightly different angles, reveal centuries of interrupted construction. Begun in the Romanesque period and reworked in Gothic style, it was never fully unified, giving it a distinctive, irregular character. Inside, a broad single-aisled hall meets a soaring but incomplete choir, and rich tapestries line the walls. This architectural patchwork, born of shifting ambitions and funding, makes it one of the most idiosyncratic cathedrals in France.
