Despite its name meaning new bridge, this stone crossing of the Garonne is the oldest surviving bridge in Toulouse, completed after more than a century of construction. Its unequal arches and rounded cutwaters were engineered to withstand the river's sudden floods, with openings to let water pass through the piers. Built of pink brick and stone, it has carried traffic between the two banks since the Renaissance. At dusk the bridge and the domed former hospital beside it are floodlit and reflected in the river.

Where next?

The world is wide open.
