This monumental triumphal arch was raised in the late seventeenth century to celebrate the French conquest of Lille, replacing an earlier medieval gate. Sculpted with allegories of victory and figures of Hercules and Mars, it once formed part of the city's ramparts. Now standing free within a small park beside the belfry of the town hall, it marks the historic southern entrance to the town. Its blend of martial symbolism and baroque decoration makes it a striking reminder of the city's contested frontier past.
