Guarding the northern side of the old port entrance, this stone fortress dates largely to the seventeenth century and incorporates a much older medieval tower. Built partly to control the city's often rebellious population, it later served as a barracks and prison. Restored as part of the waterfront cultural quarter, it is now linked by high footbridges to a modern museum and the Panier district. Walking its ramparts and courtyards reveals layered military history alongside striking views across the harbour and open sea.
