One of the oldest Christian sites in France, this fortified abbey stands above the entrance to the old port with the appearance of a small castle. Its origins reach back to late antiquity, and its atmospheric crypt preserves early sarcophagi and shadowy chapels carved into the rock. The heavy crenellated towers reflect medieval rebuilding intended to protect the monks from raiders. Each winter the abbey is central to a candlelit procession honouring a local devotion, filling the ancient nave with pilgrims.
