This large Catholic cathedral beside the River Corrib is one of the last great stone churches built in Europe in the traditional manner. Completed in 1965 on the site of a former prison, its official name honours Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and Saint Nicholas. The building blends Renaissance, Romanesque and Gothic elements beneath a green copper dome that has become a landmark of the city skyline. Inside, rose windows, mosaics and Connemara marble floors decorate a vast, echoing interior open to visitors.
