This central public square, formally the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, is the main gathering place of Galway and marks the historic entrance to the medieval city. Long used as a market and meeting ground, it was redesigned with lawns, walkways and modern sculpture, including a set of rust-coloured steel forms echoing the sails of local fishing boats. A restored seventeenth-century doorway and a fountain stand among the greenery. The square is bordered by hotels and shops and hosts festivals and events through the year.
