This regenerated waterfront district around a nineteenth-century dock basin has become one of Dublin's most striking modern quarters. Once the terminus of the Grand Canal linking the city to the River Shannon, the area fell into disuse before being transformed with offices, apartments and cultural venues. A central plaza designed by Martha Schwartz features red glowing rods and green polygons, fronting a theatre by architect Daniel Libeskind. Water sports on the dock and waterside walkways add to the appeal of the neighbourhood.
